From start to finish which came all to soon the weekend was full of well instructed aspects of bushcraft and survival techniques. Ray has a wealth of knowledge and experience which he passed on to us in a very easy to understand and practical manor.
Thanks Ray for a great couple of days
I can’t wait to join you again soon.

Had a fantastic weekend improving and learning some new bushcraft and survival skills in the wild with a great bunch.

Many thanks to Ray (and Andy) for organizing an unforgettable 2 Day Bushcraft, Wilderness & Survival Course. Really friendly and professional, well organized and prepared. Ray took great care to explain everything to our group, adapting to the needs of everyone from adults down to our young and enthusiastic teenagers (and there never ending stream of questions). Ray was the ultimate host, professional, knowledgeable and led us by example on respect for our natural environment. We learned so much in such a short space of time. Thanks again to Ray.

A group of 12 of us, adults and children, spent Sunday with Ray in Thetford Forest learning about making fires safely, knife skills, trapping etc and it was truly fab. Ray was informative, patient and held the children’s attention for the duration…and the adults too! We even learned how to gut our own fish and cook it on the camp fire. It was excellent and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it. The children had a fantastic time and it was well worth it. Thank you Ray.

I wanted to highlight what a great weekend myself and the other teachers had attending the level 2 bushcraft course. Thank you to Ray and Dave for their hospitality and sharing of knowledge. They worked tirelessly to keep the camp up and running, deliver the sessions, prepare the food, keep the fire going and all with a smile. I highly recommend any activity with the level of coaching and outstanding service received. Thanks again and we will all be returning very soon!!

An absolutely incredible weekend, the perfect balance of real survival and small comforts, everyone was incredible and so easy to be around, I have a big grin on my face at work today remembering all the fun we had and it will probably be there all week! Best money I’ve ever spent, I can’t wait to do more and I would 100% recommend any course that Ray teaches, he was a fantastic mentor who kept an aura of calm and humour at all times and delivered everything in a memorable and understandable way, keeping group morale up at all times. I will cherish these memories forever!

I spent the weekend on a level 2 survival and bushcraft course with back to the wilderness. Ray and his team were very knowledgeable and friendly. I can’t believe how much we covered in a single weekend. I left the course with skills for life and a renewed appreciation for the natural world around us.

    Excellent course!
One of the best, no actually the best, bushcraft based course I have been on. The guys were excellent and you are made to feel comfortable throughout. It was like a home away from home! I learnt lots of new skills and will be back for the assessment as soon as possible.

    Level 2 Bushcraft weekend course
Fantastic level 2 Bushcraft course. Ray and his team are very professional and great at inspiring confidence. The course provided a huge amount of information but I never felt overwhelmed by any of it.
Lots of encouragement to try new things with no pressure. The site itself is perfect, deep in the forest but a short walk away from facilities (24 hour loo!) Food was fantastic, you won’t go hungry
I can’t recommend this course enough, great value for money, nice relaxed atmosphere and 1st class tuition.

    Bushcraft Weekend (April 2023)

Had an amazing weekend with the Back to Wilderness Team (Ray, Matt and Nathan) on 22nd and 23rd April. I spent the weekend on a Bushcraft course in the beautiful surroundings of Thetford Forest (Norfolk). The first day was fast paced and encompassed a number of activities including knife skills, fish and game preparation, shelter building fire lighting and cordage. Whilst there was a great deal of content to cover, I never felt rushed. The instructors ensured that everyone had sufficient time to put into practice the theory that was taught and provided support and guidance throughout. The passion from the instructors in teaching bushcraft is infectious and any feelings of tiredness by the end of the day were forgotten as we created our first ember from a bow drill. This was followed by weaving our own cordage from natural materials around an open fire. The second day was equally fast paced and involved foraging, water purification, natural navigation, and animal trapping. However, as with the first day, the instructors ensured that there was always time for us to understand and practice what was taught. Through the activities that were taught, including the animal trapping and foraging, it was clearly evident that the instructors not only have a phenomenal understanding of our natural world but also a huge respect for it. The importance of sustainability and ethical practice was emphasised for each activity. Spending the weekend with the Back to Wilderness team opened my eyes not only to how difficult bushcraft can be but also how rewarding it can be. It is quite clear that I would not be able to achieve my expedition next year without the skills taught by the Back to Wilderness Team. Whether this be utilising my newfound skills to acquire resources for food or medicinal purposes, applying water purification techniques or creating cordage for lashings – the potential application of the skills taught on this course are endless. I would like to thank Ray, Matt and Nathan for both a memorable and invaluable experience.

A fantastic 2 days spent in the woods

Attended the Level 2 Bushcraft Course last weekend near Thetford and have to say it was an excellent course/weekend. The team delivering the course were both fun and incredibly knowledgeable and the format was interesting. Be prepared to throw yourself at it and you’ll learn a lot! Would highly recommend it.

  19. Rob

Embraced Ireland with a smile and 5* competence

Ray, in collaberation with his staff Nathan & Matt, happily delivered one of their level 2 courses in an unfamiliar location, which posed some significant logistical challenges.

A lot of work was required to get this course over the line and all contact with the team was friendly and professional (even when extreme tiredness and cancelled ferries tested the patience of the crew!)

The course itself was excellent and moulded to the specific needs of the group and environmental constraints/oppurtunities.

I and my colleagues would recommend Back to Wilderness without hesitation and we are already excited to offer them back in the near future for more craic, learning and assessment.

Thanks Ray & co – We are gratful for the extensive efforts involved.

From the start of the junior classes, years ago, to now my children have loved coming to every session at Back to Wilderness and have learned so much! This weekend my teenage son and I came to a weekend course and had the absolute best time. Fantastically well organised and taught. Everyone at Back to Wilderness is so encouraging, supportive, fun and inclusive. The atmosphere is always warm, welcoming and nurturing. The challenges can be pretty frustrating sometimes but with these people it always feels ok. Can’t wait until the next one!

Fantastic experience. My highlight of the year so far. Built a shelter to sleep in, knife/saw lesson (making tent pegs & a pot holder), made fire using a bow drill, prepped pigeon/rabbit/trout from scratch for our meals, made cordage out of nettle stems, went foraging, and learnt about water collecting/purification. All the instructors were great. Highly recommend.
